Personal Tax Return Requests

We now offer THREE ways to send us your tax return requests...

1. Via your very own secure Freshwater Portal account, where you can also: chat with your accountant, access chat history grouped by topic, retrieve previous tax and BAS returns, securely send and store documents and even settle your invoice with our team.

2. Via our website from your secure user account where you can also view and download handy tax resources. (Note – in order to maintain the tightest possible security, we do not facilitate a “save and continue later feature” under this method.

3. Download, complete and submit our simple-to-use editable PDF form.

Procedure

To prepare your personal tax return, we now require clients to submit their tax return request through our client portal. If you already have a client portal account, you can log in and provide the necessary information directly. If you don’t yet have a Tax Dome client portal account (or you can’t find your log in) simply request access along with your tax return.

Sole Traders / Contractors / Side-Hustlers
You will be prompted for a list of your business income and expenses. Spreadsheets welcome.
If you have an online bookkeeping file please select the “Invite Accountant” Option.

When we prepare your personal tax return, we review your situation in depth. We will therefore advise if we think you need to be registered for GST and why. If a registration is required, we will work with you to select the correct date of registration and ensure that your situation is completely sorted.
Rental Properties / Air B&B

If you own a rental property, our tax return organiser form will prompt you to provide a summary of your total rental income and associated expenses, including council rates, water rates, property agent fees, strata, repairs and maintenance, depreciation (if applicable), sundry costs, electricity, travel expenses, and mortgage interest. If you use a property agent, they can typically provide a summary covering most of these costs, although items like electricity, council rates, and mortgage interest may not be included.

For Airbnb properties (including renting out part of your home), a rental schedule must be included in your personal tax return. In addition to the total income from guests, please provide a summary of all property expenses for the financial year, such as rates, strata, electricity, and mortgage interest. We will also need the duration your property was rented out during the financial year to accurately apportion your expenses.

Receipts

You’re welcome to use our client portal filing facility, accessible via phone app or computer, to securely upload and store your receipts and evidence in preparation for tax time. When we prepare your tax return, we’ll be focusing on your summaries and totals, so there’s no need to attach every single receipt specifically to your annual tax return organiser. Excel summaries are encouraged.

Whether you use our portal to store your evidence or not, it’s important to keep all your receipts on hand in case of an ATO audit. As the taxpayer, this responsibility lies with you.

Maximising your outcome

 

As we draft up your tax return, we will advise you if we feel there is a particular deduction that we think you are entitled to, that has not been included within your submission to us. We pride ourselves on going out of our way to not only maximise your tax return outcome, but to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of your income tax return and your tax result.

Processing time

Once you’ve had the chance to complete your tax organiser, sign our engagement letter and settle your tax invoice,; we’ll aim to have your tax return completed within 7 days. During peak periods (July – October) this time frame can be slightly longer. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process. Do let us know if you require your return urgently and usually we can bump you to the top of our waiting list because most people aren’t in a rush.

What happens next?

If we feel that there is important information that you need to know regarding your return, we will always get in touch with you to discuss further. Similarly, if we have any queries we give you a call to discuss or email through a list of questions. Once you are happy with the return, you can then digitally sign your approved tax return for lodgment. We then lodge your tax return with the ATO and confirm with you once this is done. If you disagree with the tax return that we have prepared for you, please email or phone us with your queries and concerns or requested changes.

We like to capture as much information as possible from you at the outset in order that we have the full picture of your situation to secure you an optimal tax outcome.

If you own an air b & b (including if you rented out a part of your home using air b & b), a rental schedule will need to be included within your personal tax return. Aside from the total income you received from people staying in your property, we will also need you to gather together a summary of all your property expenses for the financial year. These will include rates, strata, electricity and mortgage interest. We will also require the amount of time that your property was rented out within the financial year in order that we can apportion your expenses accordingly.

Receipts
We are here to make your life easier. Please feel free to make use of our handy app (refer option 1 above), to securely upload and store your receipts ready for tax time. When we draft up your tax return, we will be looking at your summaries and totals only, so, unless specifically requested by a member of our team; there’s really no need to attach piles of receipts to your tax request (which we understand will take you time and ultimately stress you out). Regardless of whether you decide to use our portal to store your evidence, the main thing is that you must have all your receipts on hand in the event of an ATO audit. This responsibility lies with you as the taxpayer.

Gathering your information
We are here to help you in absolutely every way possible. We want you to feel comfortable that you understand all aspects of your tax situation. We suggest that you list all tax deductions for which you have receipts / evidence in your submission. We will be sure to review the totals that you send us and advise both if we feel you can claim more or if we feel you are claiming a deduction which might not be allowable. What happens next?
Once you have submitted your details to us for personal tax return preparation, you will receive a confirmation from our team.
Generally speaking, you will not wait more than 3-4 days for your tax return. We will keep you fully posted throughout this time frame.
