When you grow without a plan, here’s what usually happens:
- You hire staff in desperation, throwing large workloads at them immediately and hoping they’ll cope.
- You spend more money on wages, overheads, and tools, without fully mapping out how those costs will be covered.
- You take on more clients, meaning you either stretch your own time thin or trust more people with your customers directly.
On paper, your business is bigger. But in reality? You’re working harder, servicing more people, and seeing less profit.
Why Control Slips Away
As you add more people into the mix: staff, contractors, managers; you naturally lose control. That’s part of growth. But when you grow too fast, it’s chaos! Why?
- Client experience becomes inconsistent. You can’t be across every conversation.
- Staff quality is hit or miss. In rushed hiring, you might end up with under-skilled people… or worse, enthusiastic but morally questionable ones. As an owner, it’s easy to assume everyone thinks like you — they don’t
- Your time is consumed. Instead of strategy, you’re handling admin, firefighting staff issues, and keeping clients happy.
It’s exhausting. And it takes a toll on your health.
Profitability is the Silent Casualty
While all this is happening, profitability often declines. You’re spending more on wages. You’re working longer hours. Margins get thinner.
Many owners suddenly realise they’re making less money while working harder. Instead of running a business, they’ve created a stressful job for themselves. And what happens then? They stop investing in staff, pull back, and shoulder the admin load themselves; burning out even faster.
What Happens If You Get Sick?
If you’re the backbone of everything, stop and ask:
- Who would step in if you got sick tomorrow?
- Could you take a holiday without your business falling apart?
- Who’s focused on strategy while you’re buried in day-to-day admin?
Without answers to these, your business is fragile.
Sometimes You Have to Strip Back to Move Forward
If any of this sounds familiar, it might be time to pause — and even shrink — before you grow again.
- Ditch unprofitable products or services. Complexity kills margin.
- Let go of clients who aren’t aligned with your long-term goals. Don’t take it personally when clients leave — sometimes it’s the necessary shedding to make space for the right ones.
- Redefine your ideal client and your true goals.
- Set your prices properly. Growth without profit isn’t growth.
- Automate. Embrace AI and smart systems to handle processes. If you’re not, you’re already behind.
- Most importantly: have a plan.
My Experience
I know these traps inside out. Not just because I see them in my clients’ numbers all the time; but because I’ve been there myself. I’ve worked harder for less profit, stretched myself thin, hired too fast, and learned the lessons the hard way. (All while being a single Mum).
Growth can be amazing, but only if your bottom line is protected, your processes are solid, and you’re not running yourself into the ground.
If you want your business to grow sustainably, take care of your profitability first. Plan before you leap. Automate before you overload. And whatever you do, make sure you’ve got the right accountant on your side to help you read the numbers, spot the red flags, and keep you focused on the bigger picture (hint hint).
At Freshwater Taxation, we don’t just crunch numbers; we help you plan for profit. 🌈
